Echinacea: The wonderful Echinacea is also known as the "prairie coneflower." It is a plant that grows wild in North America and was already appreciated by the Indians as a medicinal plant. It reaches 90 cm in height and has purple flowers.
Rooibos: Rooibos, which means red bush and belongs to the legume family, is still cultivated exclusively in the South African region of Cederberg. The plants, which reach two metres in height, are harvested only once a year. Rooibos tea is made from the leaves and has a mild, slightly sweet, fruity flavour. It is South Africa's national drink.
Cardamom: Cardamom has been one of the most popular spices throughout the Asian and Arab world for thousands of years. Its delicate, spicy-sweet aroma makes it ideal for use in a variety of dishes, from spicy curries to spiced Christmas sweets. Thanks to its essential oils and other important nutrients, cardamom is also one of the oldest medicinal plants in the world.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon is one of the most expensive spices in the world and must have been used as a spice and medicinal plant in China as far back as 3,000 BC. Cinnamon is obtained from the bark of the cinnamon tree in South Asia, has a sweet, aromatic taste and contains numerous tannins and beneficial essential oils.
Ginger: Ginger has been used in the Far East for over 3,000 years as a spice and medicinal plant. It has a spicy and fruity flavour and contains various vitamins, essential oils and valuable minerals.
Fennel: Fennel is one of the oldest known medicinal plants in the world. It belongs to the Umbelliferae family and has been popular internationally for thousands of years for its intense aroma. Fennel has a spicy-sweet flavour that is slightly reminiscent of anise.
Roasted chicory: Also known as radicchio, this plant grows mainly with its light blue flowers on the roadside. The flowers of this plant native to Europe, north-west Africa and western Asia from the composite family open for only one day. Its root has a bitter and spicy flavour reminiscent of coffee.
Carob: The carob tree, native to the Mediterranean and Asia, is a medicinal plant from the legume family. The elongated, brown fruits of the carob tree, which grows up to 18 metres in height, have a sweet taste and contain seeds that weigh exactly 0.197 grams each. Because of this natural curiosity, carob seeds were used in ancient times as a unit of measurement for diamonds.
Basil: The “royal plant”, as the ancient Greeks called basil, arrived in Northern Europe in the 12th century. It has a wonderfully spicy aroma that is ideal both in Mediterranean cuisine and in freshly brewed tea.
Turmeric: Turmeric is an ancient medicinal plant that flourishes mainly in South Asia and the Mediterranean area. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is one of the main ingredients in curry powder. In India, ginger-like and slightly spicy, turmeric has been one of the most important spices for over 5,000 years and was even considered sacred due to its healing power.
Burdock root: Burdock is a plant from the Compositae family that was already appreciated in ancient Greece for its healing power. It grows on the edges of forests and in cultivated fields and its root, in addition to essential oils and tannins, contains a large proportion of the highly valued inulin.
Black pepper: Black pepper, also known as the "queen of spices", is now, along with salt, the most important spice in the world. It originally comes from the Malabar Coast in India and has an intense, spicy taste with varying degrees of spiciness. The ancient medicine of Ayurveda recommends black pepper not only as a condiment, but also as a medicinal plant due to its valuable substances.
Astragalus: Astragalus, with a slightly sweet taste, is one of the most important medicinal plants in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). There, the plant that we also call astragalus is known under the name “Huang Qi.” Its literal translation is “yellow leader,” and the meaning of the plant can be reflected in people.
Vanilla: The “queen of spices” is one of the most popular flavourings in the world. It belongs to the orchid family and is native to Mexico. Its delicate flavour and complex processing make vanilla a particularly popular spice and medicinal plant.
